For the Mass Readings on the 2nd Sunday of Advent (Year C), Dr. Pitre comments on John the Baptist and the New Exodus that he proclaims. Setting the stage for a time of great corruption both within Israel’s hierarchy and the Roman leadership of the time, Luke begins his Gospel by telling us the time in which John the Baptist comes on to the scene to proclaim the coming of the Messiah, and for his listeners to “prepare a way,” which has overtones of the first “way” in the desert from the first exodus, as well as the expectation of the ingathering of the Lost tribes of Israel.

Notable quote from this week’s video from the 2nd Sunday of Advent (Year C):

“First, notice the fact that Luke is clearly not writing mythology. He’s also clearly not writing a fairytale, right. No fairytale begins, “In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar,” you know, “during the governorship of Pontius Pilate.”

That’s not how fairytales begin. Fairytales begin with once upon a time, right. So Luke is clearly talking about history. So what we’re preparing for during Advent and what we’re going to celebrate during Christmas is not some myth. It’s an actual historical event that took place in real space and real time, and the gospels describe it as such. ”

Why does Pope Francis favor Cardinal Blase Cupich? We look at the history of Cardinal Blase Cupich, going back to him being named the bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota by Pope John Paul II in 1998, then bishop of Spokane, Washington by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, and his being named Cardinal-Archbishop of Chicago by Pope Francis. We examine his statements on the Latin Mass, same-sex unions, liturgy, Barack Obama, abuse of seminarians, and the policies of Pope Francis. We look at his importance role as “kingmaker” in the USCCB after the demise of Cardinal Donald Wuerl and Cardinal Joe Tobin, and his important appointment to the February 2019 summit in Rome on the Catholic crisis on priestly abuse.

“If you’re anything like me and don’t take kindly to celebrating a holiday commemorating a group of Calvinists who set up a Puritan theocracy in New England known for persecuting Catholics, then you can rest easy; the Protestants were not the first to celebrate Thanksgiving in this country — Catholics were.

Saint Augustine, Florida is the oldest settlement in the United States, founded in 1565 by Spanish Catholic explorers. On first sighting land on August 28, the feast of St. Augustine, they named the city after him. On September 8, the Nativity of Mary, they came ashore with great fanfare, to the astonishment of the natives. A Mass of Thanksgiving was held, after which a communal feast was celebrated with the local Seloy tribe. It was the first communal thanksgiving celebration in the first permanently settled European colony on American soil.”

The first Thanksgiving was not at Plymouth Rock
