The power of the Resurrection is on display in a special way in the prison accounts of Saints Peter and Paul. Being princes of the Apostles this should not surprise us. One reason for this is especially the Papacy. Due to the Resurrection, it simply cannot be destroyed… If it is ever imprisoned or damaged, it will not last long. However, we need to do our part and pray for the papacy as did the people when St. Peter was in chains. There are forty days from this feast day, August 6, to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, September 14. As we know from St. Luke’s Gospel, on Mount Tabor Our Lord discussed with Moses and Elias the true summit: “And they spoke of His decease [exodus] that He should accomplish in Jerusalem.” What is indicated in this? The true summit is 40 days away, liturgically… the length of an exodus. We know that true mountain is Calvary… Golgotha… the Triumph of the Cross. This is the true end of our road on earth… It is not to be found on Thabor but can be discussed there and meditated upon, but we must go down into the valley sooner or later. It is unavoidable. Thus, we should consider making this time of 40 days a little Lent (going down into the valley) so that we can merit in some way to be admitted into a deeper contemplation of the Face of Christ in preparation for the eternal contemplation of Christ in heaven. This is the devil’s hour, but the Lord will soon have His Day of Victory. But how are we to survive in Egypt during this hour of darkness and peril? The moral pillars that uphold our society are not just wobbling. They have collapsed. We are not just slouching towards Sodom and Gomorrah. We are in these cities like Lot and his family. It is said that when the prophet Elias ascended upwards in a fiery chariot, he let his woolen mantle…his scapular if you will…fall into the hands of the prophet Eliseus. The woolen garment was the habit of Elias, his master. This action of Elias pre-figures the action of Mary who would later let her mantle of salvation…her Brown Scapular…fall into the hands of St. Simon Stock when her spiritual children were in dire need. When the priest enrolled me in the Brown Scapular in years past, he prayed: Receive this blessed Scapular and ask the Most Holy Virgin that, by Her merits, it may be worn with no stain of sin and may protect you from all harm and bring you into everlasting life. If Mary protects us, whom shall we fear? If our Lady crushed the head of Satan himself, then she can certainly protect us from the attacks of demons. Therefore, our Brown Scapulars are a sign and guarantee of salvation, for Mary will never fail us. We hear her words to St. Simon Stock…her solemn, unbreakable promise: Whosoever shall die invested in this habit, shall not undergo the torments of hell. And because of our Lady’s promise in connection with the Sabbatine Privilege, those who wear the Brown Scapular will find a speedy release from Purgatory.
