church-hypnosis.jpgThe Church yesterday, today and tomorrow…….

Being merciful to sinners will help people become saints. The difficulty or challenge for Catholics, especially priests, is helping certain lay persons, perhaps many people, to see and understand that having mercy upon priests who have abused children will help them mature in holiness as disciples of Christ. In these last days I have been approached by a number of people hurting, angry and threatening to leave the Church for the sins of some priests. I remind them of the mercy of Christ, the mercy He lived and preached throughout His life and ministry. This does not mean that such priests should not be punished civilly and temporally. On the contrary, they should be punished. Punishing them in this life is a just act that will hopefully lead them to open their hearts to the mercy of Christ through repentance and reparation. The hope and prayer is that these priests will not suffer eternal punishment, but will find healing in Christ. For people considering leaving the Church because of the sins of such priests, please don’t. Remember some 96% of priests have been faithful in discharging their sacred ministry as shepherds, including myself. Don’t let the 4% cause you to leave. You are Catholic not because of a priest, but because of the divine person of Christ Himself who founded only the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. In the parable of the weeds in the wheat, Jesus proclaims that He wills for all people, good and bad, to remain together in His fold, the Church, until the end of time. By being close to sinners, the faithful disciples can help lead the unfaithful, the weeds, to Christ through repentance. The more sinners there are in the Church, the more should the people of God preach and live the Word of God to help lead such people to full healing in Christ. At the end of time, Jesus will separate the unrepentant weeds from the faithful wheat. In Christ with Blessed Mary, Friar Mariano D. Veliz, O.P.
