Questions revolving around marriage and human sexuality are deeply felt in our homes and communities. We join with our Holy Father Pope Francis in affirming the inviolable dignity of all people and the Church’s important role in accompanying all those in need. In doing so, we also stand with Pope Francis in preserving the dignity and meaning of marriage as the union of a man and a woman. The two strands of the dignity of the person and the dignity of marriage and the family are interwoven. To pull apart one is to unravel the whole fabric.

When a prominent Catholic politician publicly and voluntarily officiates at a ceremony to solemnize the relationship of two people of the same-sex, confusion arises regarding Catholic teaching on marriage and the corresponding moral obligations of Catholics. What we see is a counter witness, instead of a faithful one founded in the truth.

Pope Francis has been very clear in affirming the truth and constant teaching of the Church that same-sex relationships cannot be considered “in any way similar or even remotely analogous to God’s plan for marriage and family.”1 Laws that redefine marriage to deny its essential meaning are among those that Catholics must oppose, including in their application after they are passed.2 Such witness is always for the sake of the common good.

During our Holy Father’s remarkable visit to us last year, he reminded us that all politicians “are called to defend and preserve the dignity of [their] fellow citizens in the tireless and demanding pursuit of the common good, for this is the chief aim of all politics.”3 Catholic politicians in particular are called to “a heroic commitment” on behalf of the common good and to “recognize their grave responsibility in society to support laws shaped by these fundamental human values and oppose laws and policies that violate [them].”4

Faithful witness can be challenging—and it will only grow more challenging in the years to come—but it is also the joy and responsibility of all Catholics, especially those who have embraced positions of leadership and public service.

Let us pray for our Catholic leaders in public life, that they may fulfill the responsibilities entrusted to them with grace and courage and offer a faithful witness that will bring much needed light to the world. And may all of us as Catholics help each other be faithful and joyful witnesses wherever we are called.

Hillary Clinton

by Richard Ducayne

WASHINGTON (ChurchMilitant.com – Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s shortlist for vice presidential possibilities has been leaked. The list is quite short and contains two self-identified Catholics.

The first possible pick on the shortlist is Methodist Elizabeth Warren, who has been outspoken about her support for access to abortion. She has supported public abortion funding as well as laws that would force churches to provide birth control, and has said there should be no Supreme Court nominees who oppose legal abortion. Warren has also been a vocal proponent of the LGBT movement.

The second possible pick on Hillary’s VP list is former Ohio senator Sherrod Brown. Brown is a Lutheran and has supported LGBT rights, and has voted against prohibiting same-sex couples from adopting children in Washington. D.C. Sherrod is also a strong advocate for easy access to abortion.

There are other Protestant picks for Hillary’s campaign, but two of her choices include Catholics. One of her picks, Tom Perez, former secretary of labor under the Obama administration, has been involved in scandals that have been swept under the rug.

In 2008, Perez dropped voter intimidation charges against two men from the New Black Panther Party. The men had stood in front of a polling place in Philadelphia with nightsticks and became aggressive when people standing by asked what they were doing.

The case was said to have been straightforward against the two men. This was until the head of the Civil Rights Division — Perez at the time — dropped the case. The attorney who worked for Perez, J. Christian Adams, resigned in protest and said that Barack Obama’s choice of Perez was the “most extreme cabinet nominee in 70 years.”

Perez also relates with Clinton when it comes to the subject of emails. Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa has said it appears Perez used his personal email account almost 1,200 times since 2009 to conduct business. This included communicating with abortion giant Planned Parenthood and the New York Times.

Another Catholic pick by Clinton is Xavier Becerra, who is pro-choice and supports access to abortion. He received a 100 percent rating from Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America in 2012.

Other Catholic potential VPs include Julian Castro, a strong supporter of the LGBT agenda, and Tim Ryan, who used to be known as a pro-life Democrat and now supports abortion. Protestants Eric Garcetti, mayor of Los Angeles, and Cory Booker, senator from New Jersey, also join the list

Fifty-four percent of Catholics voted for Obama in 2008, and 50 percent of Catholics voted for Obama in 2012. Some say this is owing to Barack Obama’s choice of a Catholic running mate in Joseph Biden.
